Thanks go to Mr David K of Staddiscombe, near Plymouth for these images of the Boys Brigade at camp-mostly Renney, near Heybrook Bay. Taken c1900 they show a pride within the youth of the day that sadly gas gone - "train to serve" - that would be others and not yourself!! "they might take you!" - if you are good enough, "to attend with unfailing regularity" - just how far has society fallen?
Images include Bovisands Beach, the Elburton to Wembury bus, New Street on the Barbican, Plymouth & above all the camp at Renney..Renney Rocks, Renney Point - a famous local name for an area. Most interesting are what is in the background of some of the camp scenes...firstly some of the buildings are accommodations for Renney Coastal Defence Battery - private housing today...do the occupiers know all this happened outside their windows?...secondly a camouflaged bunker/machine gun post with gun embrasures is seen in the background, as well as a possible above ground ready use ammunition magazine/earthworks of the type still seen today as a store to the close by Jennycliffe Cafe - are these works still there but buried and shrouded by vast growths of bushes and briars?
