PART 2 - THE MISSING SECTION!
Saturday 13th October 2001
When the first shelter was found here earlier in the year, it did not by any means occupy all the available ground area, and it also seemed just too small.
So it was that I again received a phone call from my electrical friend Andrew Brewer telling me that another section had just been unearthed.
In double quick time I was on the site and away exploring and recording the shelter. It was nothing special, square trench shape, pre-cast concrete slabs, and in part, strengthened by steel girders.
The shelter was "cut" in half by a post war brick wall, no doubt built to strengthen the roof, to enable it to withstand the weight of a Civil Defence fire station built above it in the 1950s and 60s.
There were holes smashed in the centre of these walls, so we were able to explore the shelter in it's entirety. We found a nice childhood sketch portrait of Hitler.
As we were leaving, via what was once the airlock, Andrew happened to look up, up into a dark recess, in the small black void between the top girder and the concrete roof.
He put his hand up and plucked down a beautiful statue, a Chinese statue, a lion and her/his two cubs - made in red marble..WOW!!
What could have led this statue to be put here? It was hidden, not lost or discarded, it was carefully put away in it's little hidey hole.
We shall probably never know!! What sort of object is it?
At the time I was working in a Chinese company, when asked, my collegues felt it could be a bad luck token.
So it's really odd that just afterwards Andrew became very ill, had a family tragedy, ..while I lost my job as my firm when out of business.
Am I glad he found it, ..and not me!!
HERE IS A NOT TO SCALE PLAN OF THE SHELTER
